COMMUNICATION SKILLS - I

 

1. What is Communication?

Communication is the process of exchanging thoughts, facts and ideas between two or more people by means of verbal and non-verbal language.

Or

Communication is the process of transferring or sharing of information between two or more people.

 

2. Name the different Communication Styles (Types of communication).

They are the different types of communication which can be done. It is of three types:

1.      Verbal communication

2.      Non-verbal communication

3.      Visual communication

 

3. What is Verbal communication?

Verbal communication is the use of language to transfer/share information through speaking or writing.

It is one of the most common types used during presentations, video conferences, phone calls, meetings and one-to-one conversations.

 

4. What are the Factors which determine the effectiveness of verbal communication?

The factors which determine the effectiveness of verbal communication are

  • Pace
  • Clarity in pronunciation
  • Volume/pitch
  • Choice of words
  • Fluency
  • Length of communication

5. What are the different types of Verbal Communication?

The different types of Verbal Communication are

  • Oral communication
  • Written communication

6. What is Oral communication?

The process of expressing information or ideas through spoken words is known as oral communication.

 

7. What is Written communication?

The process of sending messages in form of written words to convey information is known as written communication.

 

8. What is Non-Verbal communication?

Non-Verbal communication means communicating without the use of words, oral or written. It includes body language, gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, pointing fingers, etc.

 

9. What are the different elements of Non-Verbal communication?

The different elements of non-verbal communication are

  • Facial expression
  • Gestures
  • Voice
  • Body language
  • Eye gaze
  • Physical contact

 10. What is Visual Communication?

Any verbal or non-verbal communication which uses the sense of sight is visual communication.

or

Visual communication is the act of using photographs, videos, drawings, sketches, charts and graphs to convey information.

 

11. What is Communication Cycle?

Communication cycle is the process by which a message is sent by one individual, and it passes through a chain of recipients.

 

12. Name and explain the different elements of communication cycle.

The different elements of Communication cycle are:

i) Sender (Source): The person who wants to send the message

ii) Idea: The information which the sender wants to share with the receiver.

iii) Message: This is the final piece of information that is conveyed to the receiver

iv) Encoding: This is the common language for the message selected by the sender and can be understood by the receiver.

v) Communication channel: It is the medium selected by the sender to transfer the message to the receiver.

vi) Receiver (Target): The person to whom the message is to be sent

vii) Decoding: Interpretation of the message by the receiver.

viii) Feedback: The receiver’s response to the message.

 

13. What is Perspective in communication?

Perspective is an individual’s point of view through which they interpret and understand every communication and event happening around them.

Different people have different perceptive as everyone sees things differently from others.

 

14. What are the factors which affects Perspective in communication?

The different factors which affect perspective in communication are as follows:

  • Visual Perspective
  • Language
  • Past Experiences
  • Attitude
  • Prejudice
  • Environment
  • Feelings
  • Beliefs

 15. What is Effective Communication?

An effective communication is a communication between two or more persons where the intended message is successfully delivered, received and understood by the recipient.

 

16. What are the principles of Effective Communication (7Cs of communication)?

The principles of Effective Communication also known as 7Cs of communication are Clear, Concise, Concrete, Correct, Coherent, Complete and Courteous.

Clear: Be clear about what you want to say

Concise: Use simple words and say only what is needed

Concrete: Use exact words and phrases

Correct: Use correct spellings, languages and grammar.

Coherent: Your words should make sense and should be related to the main topic

Complete: Your message should have all the needed information

Courteous: Be respectful, friendly and honest.
