CHAPTER 3: ICT SKILLS - I

What do you mean by ICT?
ICT stands for Information and Communication Technology.
It includes a diverse set of technological tools and resources used to
communicate, create, disseminate, store, and manage information.
2. What are the basic ICT Skills required by a person?
The basic ICT Skills required by a person are
- Knowing how to operate computers; and
- Knowing how to browse the internet for collecting, storing and disseminating information.
Some uses of ICT in our day-to-day life are
- Pay bills online
- Watch movies online
- Watch matches online
- Purchase commodities online
- Order food online
- Book Bus, Train, Flight, Movie tickets online
The various ICT Tools are
- Mobiles & Smartphones
With a simple mobile phone we can only make phone calls
and receive calls. With a smartphone we
can make calls and do things that we normally do using a computer, such as
browsing the web, sending e-mails, making video calls, playing games, listening
to music, watching movies and much more.
- Tablets
A tablet is a mini computer with input,
output and processing functions that are
all combined into one touchscreen, where
we can do various tasks just
by touching its
screen. It is bigger than a
smartphone and we can perform all the functions that one can perform on a
computer or a smartphone.
- Radio & TV
TV and radio are being used as an ICT tool since a long
time. Radio is used to broadcast audio while TV is used to broadcast audio-visual
information to many people.
The commonly found apps in Smartphones are Phone, Camera,
Calendar, Email, Photos, Clock, Maps, Messages, Web Browser, Music, Google Play
Store/Apple Store.
6. What are the basic features of Mobile Device?
The basic features of Mobile Device are Bluetooth,
Chargeable Battery, Wi-Fi, Touch Screen, Camera, Clock, Cellular network
connectivity, Global Positioning System.
7. Name the basic gestures used in a mobile device.
The basic gestures used in a mobile device are Tap, Tap
and Hold, Drag, Swipe, Double Tap, Pinch
8. Name some common peripheral
devices.
Some common peripheral devices are Keyboard, Mouse,
Microphone, Projector, Monitor, Speaker, Scanner and Printer.
9. Name the various peripheral devices.
The
various peripheral devices are light pen, plotter, joystick, speakers,
microphone, scanner, printer, digitising tablet and webcam.
10. What is operating system?
Operating
system is a software which acts as an interface between the user and the
computer hardware.
11. Name the different types of Operating System?
The
different types of operating systems are Time Sharing OS, Multiprocessing
OS, Multi-user OS and GUI OS.
